WHAT MAKES OUR ACADEMICS SO SPECIAL?

At Hendrik Louw Primary School, we emphasize subject-specific teaching from Grade 4 onwards. This approach allows us to have dedicated subject specialists who are enthusiastic about their respective fields. They employ various technological tools to convey subject content to our learners with zeal.

Our computer room remains accessible after regular hours, enabling learners to conduct additional research. Approved computer programs are also introduced to further reinforce the subject material. A teacher is available to assist them with these resources.

WHAT DO WE DO FOR ENRICHMENT?

Our learners participate annually in different Olympiads such as:

  • Conquesta
  • Mathematics in Action
  • Horizon Maths
  • Amesa
  • Living Maths
  • Additional Mathematics enrichment classes after hours

MARINE STUDIES AND SUSTAINABILTY

Hendrik Louw Primary School has created an additional subject called: Marine Studies and Sustainability (MSS) since we are known as “the school by the sea”. The content within Marine Studies is woven together to form an integration subject covering numerous fields of relevant information.

We aim to equip our learners with a thorough understanding about ways to conserve and sustain the ocean for the future. Marine Studies is broken up into four strands:

  1. Marine Biology
  2. Oceanography
  3. Ocean Ecosystems
  4. Humans and the Ocean

By understanding how the ocean is connected to everything, we aim to teach our learners:

  • How to appreciate, care for and protect the ocean.
  • Understand the ocean’s importance when studying climate change, which affects all people.
  • About the thousands of plant and animal species in the ocean that directly or indirectly impact the environment they live in.
  • About plastic pollution, overfishing and habitat destruction.
  • The need to conserve our marine biome for future generations by bringing out action plans and sustainable practices to minimise the detrimental effects on the ocean and marine live.

We further strive to enhance the study of MSS by:

  • Having beach outings, since the Strand beach is walking distance from our school.
  • Take the learners to the aquarium in Cape Town at least once in their primary school career to learn more about marine life.

GRADE 1

First step in Foundation Phase

The Grade 1 year is a journey of discovery - exciting and full of fun. We believe that learning takes place best when our learners are happy and therefore we strive to create a stress-free environment where they can flourish. Discipline and routine is of crucial importance for a Grade 1 learner, as it creates a safe environment and defines borders. The five experienced educators are fully equipped to teach our Grade 1 learners with patience, insight and love. We believe in including the parents in the learning experience, so that we work together as a team in furthering the best interests of each child’s development. Many skills are taught, such as mathematics, writing and reading. The learners are encouraged to master life skills such as self-discipline and independence. In Grade 1, social and emotional growth takes place, which prepares learners for a higher level of independence. We also focus on physical development and encourage sports participation.  Grade 1 educators aim to create and encourage strong values in our learners so that they are prepared for everyday life, inside and outside the classroom.

GRADE 2

Together we strengthen the foundation for success.

In Grade 2, the focus shifts to the acquisition of basic skills in language, mathematics and life skills. Educators need to be very aware of the developmental stages of learners. Our grade 2 educators create an environment that motivates each learner to be an active participant in the learning process. The physical, emotional and intellectual development of the Grade 2 learner remains the main priority. Grade 2 educators constantly keep a close eye on each learner to ensure a balanced development of all skills. Tasks are constantly adapted, taking into account the uniqueness of each learner and the progress of the class as a whole.  Learners are encouraged to enjoy the learning experience and the necessary values, habits and routines that are established. Learners' sustained participation is achieved by encouraging them to actively participate in problem solving. The parent-educator relationship continues to play a vital role in the learner's development.  Parents are informed regularly of learner's progress. The Grade 2 educators work as a dynamic team and use modern technology and communication skills to ensure that the environment and learning materials are used optimally for the establishment of skills. Learners with a solid foundation enter Grade 3 with confidence, equipped for a successful school career.

GRADE 3

End of Foundation Phase

Grade 3 is the final year of the Foundation Phase. During this year, the final acquisition of knowledge and concepts will take place which are required for the progression to the Intermediate Phase. The Grade 3 educators of Hendrik Louw Primary School maintain an undisputed record of excellence in the teaching of Mathematics and Home Language which is reflected in the Systemic Tests of the WCED. The school has received several awards from the Department of Education over the years emphasizing our continual strive towards excellence. In Grade 3 we offer a dynamic and lively environment where the educators have a combination of experience and youth. Learners are encouraged to develop as individuals and to also work more independently. Grade 3 teachers are passionate about acquiring knowledge, as are the children in their classes. Since the learners in Grade 3 are with one educator for the whole school day, strong bonds develop between educators and learners. This helps with the development of emotionally aware learners who grow in self-confidence and purpose. We take pride in the development of an engaging environment that is physically and emotionally safe.  Here learners actively learn to apply previous knowledge obtained and to actively engage with others on an individual and group basis which in turn helps to promote excellent academic engagement.  We support each learner to achieve their personal best with flexible and relevant teaching strategies in preparation for the Intermediate Phase.
