Culture
In the cultural department of Hendrik Louw Primary School, we believe in mass participation. We strive to create opportunities for as many learners as possible to develop a love for the arts and to shape and enhance their talents through participation in speech, debating, music, and art activities. The following cultural activities are offered:
Choirs
The Junior and Senior choirs perform regularly and are always among the most popular choirs at concerts. The Junior choir consists of 60 grade 2-3 learners and the senior choir consists of 80-90 grade 4-7 learners. Learners must audition to sing in the choirs. 10-15 learners are chosen annually to sing in a singing group. The Louwtjie singing group performs at smaller events as well as at the Eisteddfod.
Eisteddfod
Learners have the opportunity to participate in the Helderberg Eisteddfod in the following categories: Drama, music and art. Hendrik Louw Primary School learners regularly receive medals and are recognized as the best in their respective categories.
Debating
Learners learn to write and deliver a reasoned speech. The love for language is promoted. Beginner debaters have the opportunity to enter internal competitions within the school. More advanced learners also participate in competitions outside the school, such as the Raakvatters, ATKV- Stellenbosch Primary School competition as well as the Interschool competition.
Music
The ultimate goal of Hendrik Louw's music department is to make music with friends and thereby enjoy it more. We believe in providing as many learners as possible with the opportunity to participate in music activities. This is made possible through music lessons at the music school, the bands/ensemble, junior and senior choirs, as well as the revue.
Music School
Instruction is offered in the following instruments: marimba, piano, keyboard, drums, violin, recorder, guitar, ukulele, and singing. Theory lessons are also offered. The outstanding achievements of our learners during Eisteddfods and external music exams are proof of our high standard. Even the youngest and most inexperienced learners are encouraged to participate in our concerts, which take place at least once a year. Lessons are given during school hours.
Band
The top learners in drums, guitar, piano, singing, and keyboard audition annually to play in the Hendrik Louw bands. Here, learners are taught the basic principles of playing together in a band. The groups perform at Eisteddfods and concerts throughout the year.
Ensemble
The Ensemble consists of acoustic instruments such as violins, guitars, keyboards, and percussion instruments. The Ensemble mainly plays light music and participates in various cultural events and the Helderberg Eisteddfod.
Revue
At Hendrik Louw Primary School, we strive to provide all our learners with the chance to engage in a stage production at least once during their primary school journey. We believe this experience fosters self-confidence and nurtures creativity.
Our next revue will be in September 2024.
