INTERNAL PROJECTS
INTERNAL: SOCIAL WELL-BEING
Our foundation strives to first meet the basic needs of learners in our school. To achieve this, we launch food drives within the school to collect the following items:
- Non-perishable food items
- Toiletries
- Stationery
If you or your business would like to support a care project where the need is truly great, through donations of items or funds, please contact Franci de Jager at:
You can get involved by:
- Sponsoring a learner's stationery box in December.
- Regularly donating non-perishable food items and toiletries.
- Contributing a monthly amount to our care project via debit order or direct bank transfer. These funds are used to support learners identified by the school’s social worker after home visits.
Bank details:
Hendrik Louw Primary School, Standard Bank, Branch Code: 051001, Current Account No: 063164825, Reference: REEF FOUNDATION.
A Section 18A receipt will be issued to businesses upon request.
INTERNAL: EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING
BLUE, THE CALM SEA TURTLE
Sea turtles are known for their calm nature and symbolise wisdom and endurance. A gentle sea turtle can lend a comforting ear. Learners are encouraged to write letters to Blue, sharing their emotions.
REEF’S CARING MUMS
Our school is blessed with a group of trained volunteer mums who focus on encouraging spontaneous communication among our children. These mums, under the guidance of our Social Worker, respond to the letters (on behalf of Blue) and offer practical tips to help learners manage their emotions or simply provide a sympathetic ear.
WHO ARE THESE VOLUNTEER MUMS AND HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED?
If you feel you possess the following qualities, you can apply to become part of this vital group of volunteers:
- Empathetic and gentle
- Christian values
- Willingness to learn and attend training sessions
- Reliable and loyal
We require a police clearance and flexible working hours are recommended. The School Governing Body's Outreach Committee will invite suitable candidates for an interview after a thorough selection process. This group of volunteers receives regular training and works closely with our School Management and Social Worker.

EXTERNAL PROJECTS AND OUTREACHES
Hendrik Louw Primary School recognises the value of reaching out to the community beyond our school.
STRAND NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH
We are proud to support the Strand Neighbourhood Watch’s projects. In 2024 we assisted with the Silver Hair Project, collecting toiletries for the elderly in our community.
OUTREACH TO FRASERBURG
We regularly deliver books, school uniforms, sports equipment, teaching aids and stationery to Fraserburg, near Sutherland in the Karoo. There’s even a "mini Hendrik Louw" with school and sports uniforms no longer in circulation at Hendrik Louw Primary School.
LEARNER COUNCIL OUTREACHES
Each year, our Learner Council launches various projects in our local community:
- Kfm and Mandela Day: Since 2023, we have been Tracey Lange of Kfm's Ambassador in the Helderberg for Mandela Day. In 2023, we launched a whole-school knitting project, donating numerous blankets, beanies, and gloves to local old-age homes. In 2024, we will focus on children’s homes and donate blankets, beanies and gloves to Heartlands Baby and Child Sanctuary, Badisa, Sir Lowry’s Pass community and our own school’s needy learners.
- Our learners regularly reach out to old-age homes with gifts, interactions with the elderly or a musical concert.
- After the winter floods, we donated warm soup to Helping Hand.
OUTREACH TO WUPPERTHAL PRIMARY
Hendrik Louw Primary’s outreach to Wupperthal Primary, deep in the Biedouw Valley in the Cederberg, was an annual tradition from 2015 to 2023. This outreach was the brainchild of Mrs Christa Cruywagen and her husband Kulu, who recognised the need at Wupperthal Primary in 2015. Since then, Christa and Kulu have taken the top Grade 7 Mathematics learners, who are proficient in Afrikaans, to assist the learners and teachers with learning materials and sports equipment.
Our learners and a few teachers spend two days attending school with the Wupperthal learners, sharing knowledge and teaching assistance. Ironically, we are the ones who return enriched each year. The contentment and gratitude of the Wupperthal community have left a wonderful, unforgettable, and lasting impression on each of us.
