Activities in small groups to develop essential skills.

At Hendrik Louw Primary School, we offer a structured programme to develop motor and phonological skills in younger learners. This programme aims to enhance our learners' motor skills, as there is a positive correlation with academic performance, particularly in literacy and numeracy.

The following are addressed in a creative and effective manner:

  • Gross motor skills
  • Fine motor skills
  • Phonological awareness

It is important for us to optimally develop the major muscles in order to enable learners to use their smaller muscles accurately and with good coordination. Clumsy learners usually find it more difficult to read and spell, hence the reason why we act preventatively by developing the necessary gross motor skills. Attention deficit disorder and passivity are also clear indicators of delays in motor skills.

Fine motor skills are necessary for learners to work quickly and skilfully with their hands. To maintain effective writing speed, to learn to read and write successfully, and to perform mathematical operations, motor skills must be developed.
